November 4, 2012 - I found myself trekking around Rock Mountain National Park recently, and came across this small, iced-over pond with a pine tree that had recently subcumbed to a fierce wind storm. The scene reminded me of the winter season that is about to envelop the area. And as I stood here framing the shot, I could here elk somewhere in the wild bellowing out their distinctive howls.
November 4, 2012 - Can you guess the name of this apparent stream running through Rocky Mountain National Park? Well, I may have given the answer away by the title of the image. Yes, this innocent looking lazy stream is actually the mighty Colorado river!! Approximately 10 miles upstream from this location is where the Colorado River is born. The River begins on the western slopes of the Continental Divide and the Never Summer Mountains. From this modest start, the River flows some 1,400 miles - through Utah and Canyonlands National Park, Arizona and Grand Canyon National Park, the Hoover dam, and finally to the Gulf of California. It's hard to image that this little stretch of water will travel that far. Amazing! I wish that when I photographed this scene a thirsty moose or elk would have wandered into the shot, but alas that was not to be. The scene is still beautiful nonetheless.
November 4, 2012 - My partner in crime - Mattie - enjoyed romping around Rocky Mountain National Park as much as I did. Shhh... don't tell the park rangers that I let Mattie wander some of the trails... pets aren't allowed on the trails in the park.
November 4, 2012 - Rocky Mountain National Park holds the remnants of one of the areas first dude ranches. In 1917, German immigrants Sophia and John Holzwarth built their homestead here. Wartime prohibition forced the closure of their saloon that they operated in Denver. The Holzwarth's began hosting friends from the city at their lodge in the 1920's. Their lodge was later referred to as The Never Summer Ranch. The Ranch offered fishing, hunting, and horseback rides. In 19975, Never Summer Ranch and the Holzwarth Homestead became part of the Rocky Mountain National Park. The fence line shown in this photograph is one of sveral structures that remain today in the park that remind us of the Never Summer Ranch.
January 19, 2013 - After recovering from a bout with the flu, I decided to venture outside and participate in a snowshoe hike in Rocky Mountain National Park. The destinations for today's hike were three lakes: Nymph Lake, Dream Lake, and finally Emerald Lake. The hike was fantastic, despite the fact that I discovered all too quickly that I'm not quite in condition to hike at this altitude. At any rate, the temperatures were mild for the day, and it was a beautiful day to hike. This is a shot I took looking over Emerald Lake. The large mountain to the right is known as Hallett's Peak. It is located on the Continental Divide and its peak is at 12,700 ft. Believe it or not, there is a trail that novice hikers can follow to get to the peak of Hallett's Peak! Maybe another day.
